How rare is bow hunter syndrome? Is it really that rare? This mechanical compression of the vertebral arteries can occur along with other anomalies, including cervical osteophytes, fibrous bands, and osseous prominences. Vertebrobasilar insufficiency usually occurs in the presence of atherosclerosis or cervical spondylosis, but symptoms can also arise when there is intermittent vertebral artery occlusion induced by extreme rotation or extension of the head. When this blood supply is insufficient, vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI) can develop and cause symptoms such as neck pain, headaches/migraines, vertigo, dizziness, cardiovascular-like problems, drop attacks, difficulty swallowing, and/or speaking, and auditory and visual disturbances. Proper blood flow in the vertebral arteries is crucial because these arteries travel up to form the basilar artery at the brainstem and provide circulation to the back half of the brain. The vertebral arteries supply the posterior two-fifths (40%) of the cerebrum and hindbrain, which includes the cerebellum and the lower part of the brain stem including the pons and medulla oblongata. Impingement or compression of the vertebral arteries can cause many symptoms and conditions. Having cervical instability can be extremely dangerous, as vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI) demonstrates.
